Lithium-ion batteries contain highly toxic and flammable chemicals which are generally well controlled. However if controls fail or a battery is damaged the battery can very quickly erupt into a fire of intense heat with toxic smoke and fumes being emitted, which is extremely difficult to extinguish.
Therefore, with the dramatic rise in the number of devices using rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries, workplaces are required to take action to minimise risk of injury that occurs when a Lithium-ion battery fails.
This workplace safety poster is one in a series of six posters designed to help workplaces inform workers of their policies and procedures to help ensure Lithium-ion battery safety. This poster shows the five main causes of Lithium-ion battery fires, and the six main warning signs that a fire is imminent, so that workers might avoid damaging batteries, and can identify and quickly respond to the risk if a battery fails.
Please note that this information is general in nature, so workplaces should ensure it aligns with the guidance and requirements of safety regulators and councils in their location.
